Port Meteorological Officer Visit Aboard Dapeng Moon

On 8 March 2024, a new Port Meteorological Officer (PMO) of the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), Senior Experimental Officer Mr. Cheung Wing-kai, Leo successfully conducted a visit to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier Dapeng Moon as arranged by China LNG Shipping (International) Co. Ltd. Our team received a warm welcome from Ship Master Angus Ogilvie.

What made this visit particularly special was Captain Ogilvie’s arrangement for HKO’s colleagues to learn more about the configuration of the LNG carrier.  This opportunity allowed us to gain valuable insights into the vessel's operations.

During the visit, we replaced a malfunctioned digital barograph, which had been loaned under the Hong Kong Voluntary Observing Ships (HKVOS) program.  Through this barograph, many valuable marine weather reports had been collected.  We expressed our heartfelt gratitude to the company and the vessel for their contributions.  We also calibrated the onboard barometer, which is crucial for safe navigation and efficient maritime operations.

We strongly encourage any vessel participating in the HKVOS program to invite us on board if they plan to berth in Hong Kong.  Additionally, we most welcome ships not yet part of HKVOS to consider joining our network, contributing to vital marine meteorological data collection and enhancing maritime safety across global waters.
